AUTODESK CONTRACT NEGOTIATION

Autodesk knows it can’t be swapped out mid-project. The renewal is priced like it.

Autodesk sells named-user subscriptions and Flex tokens, with larger customers on Enterprise Business Agreements. Its next-generation AI assistant rolls out from 2027, with subscription terms still to be announced.

How Autodesk prices an enterprise deal

Autodesk sells its design software as named-user subscriptions: one license per person, on one-year or three-year terms. Collections, such as the AEC Collection and the Product Design and Manufacturing Collection, bundle several products under one named-user subscription.

Flex is the consumption alternative. Customers buy tokens in advance and use them daily when a product is opened, at a fixed rate per product, and unused tokens expire. Since June 4, 2026, the minimum Flex purchase is 33 tokens for $99, down from 100 tokens for $300.

Larger customers buy through an Enterprise Business Agreement, or EBA, a multi-year agreement across products with negotiated rates, often combining named-user subscriptions with a pool of Flex tokens. Support is included in the subscription, with higher tiers available.

Autodesk’s fiscal year ends on January 31, and its fourth quarter runs from November to January.

What moves an Autodesk renewal

An Autodesk renewal is priced per named user, and several things move that number at once.

Named usersOne license per person, assigned and tracked
CollectionsSeveral products under one subscription
FlexTokens used daily, at fixed rates per product
AgreementStandard subscriptions or an EBA across products

Each of these changes what the business actually pays for the same software. Knowing which one is moving the number is the starting point.

Where an Autodesk renewal gets expensive

A platform nobody swaps mid-project

Autodesk tools sit at the center of live design and construction work. The account team knows a switch is unlikely and prices the renewal with that in mind.

Licenses assigned to people who have moved on

Named-user licenses are billed per person assigned. Licenses still assigned to people who have left or changed roles are part of the renewal count.

Tokens that expire

Flex tokens are bought in advance and expire if unused. A pool sized above actual use is paid for either way.

AI terms still to come

Autodesk will announce subscription terms for its next-generation Assistant in 2027. A multi-year renewal signed now may run into terms that are not yet written.

We have only had positive experiences engaging Deal IQ; all contract negotiations we have worked with them on have been successful, so we would be very likely to recommend their services.

A POSITION, NOT A FLOOR

Autodesk’s best and final is a position. It isn’t the floor.

On a $65M renewal, Autodesk had stopped moving after a full negotiation. The final price still came in 22% below its best and final. What an account team can approve and what Autodesk will accept are different numbers.

What well-prepared buyers do before an Autodesk renewal

  1. Start 6 to 12 months out

A renewal that starts close to the end date runs on Autodesk’s timeline.

  2. Know your named-user count

Compare assigned licenses with the people using them.

  3. Check your Flex balance

Know what is used, what is left and when it expires.

  4. Know what AI is in your plan

Check which AI features your current subscriptions include.

  5. Know where you fall in Autodesk’s year

Autodesk’s fiscal year ends January 31. November to January is when it closes its year.
