How we work / Questions to ask

BUYER GUIDE

Questions to ask before you hire a negotiation firm.

The right firm depends on the deal. These are the questions that separate one kind of help from another.

Presented by the Deal IQ team  ·  Updated September 2026

The questions

  1. 1

Are you independent of the vendor?

Some advisors also resell, implement or partner with the vendors they advise on. Ask who pays them, and for what.

  2. 2

    Do you negotiate, or advise?

A benchmark or a report tells you where a price stands. A negotiator moves it. Know which you are buying.

  3. 3

What do we pay if the price does not improve?

With a true contingency model, nothing.

  4. 4

    Who will do the work?

Ask who leads the deal day to day and what they know about this vendor.

  5. 5

Can you show results with this vendor?

Look for outcomes on similar vendors and deal sizes.

  6. 6

    How fast can you move?

A firm that needs weeks to start may not fit a deal that closes next week.

How Deal IQ answers them

We are independent and work only for the buyer. We negotiate, directly with the vendor or behind the scenes with your team, with a dedicated deal lead and a network of 350+ former vendor sales, pricing and deal desk leaders behind them. If we do not improve the price, there is no fee. We have negotiated with 600+ vendors across 3,000+ negotiations, and the average engagement takes four business days.
